The Leadership Lens: Internal Promotions vs External Hiring

One of the biggest hiring decisions organisations face isn't who to hire, it's where to hire from.

Promoting internally rewards performance, strengthens engagement and preserves organisational knowledge. External hiring, however, introduces fresh perspectives, specialist expertise and experience gained from different markets.

The strongest organisations don't treat this as an either-or decision.

They promote internally when future leaders have already demonstrated the capability to step up. They hire externally when the business is entering new markets, adopting new technologies or building capabilities that don't yet exist internally.

This balance is becoming increasingly important as maritime businesses transform. Singapore's maritime strategy places significant emphasis on developing new capabilities in digitalisation, AI, cybersecurity and sustainability, recognising that future growth depends on continuously strengthening both existing talent and attracting new expertise.

Leadership Insight

A promotion rewards what someone has achieved. A strategic hire prepares your business for what's coming next.
