Key Roles and Responsibilities
Technical Management / Operations

Accountable for vessel inspection and ensuring ships' condition and maintenance standards meet company procedures.

Ensure all maintenance is performed to a high standard and in line with manufacturers’ recommendations.

Prepare technical specifications and evaluate tenders.
-
Supervise daily operational activities of assigned vessels.
-
Regularly update Line Manager on vessel operations, budget performance, and incidents.
-
Coordinate with Procurement to ensure timely and economical supply of spare parts in line with vessel trading schedules.
-
Promote and implement the company’s health, safety, environment, and quality policies on board.
-
Lead all technical mobilization activities, refits, dry-docking, and major repairs. Plan dry docks and repairs at regular intervals.
Regulatory / Statutory Compliance
-
Ensure 100% compliance with IMO, Flag State, and Port State regulations.
-
Maintain ship certificates and survey status, tracking renewals and ensuring valid documents are on board.
Financial Management
-
Monitor and report on operating budgets; work closely with Technical, Procurement, and Finance teams to stay within agreed variance (target: 3%).

Assist in planning annual operating budgets.

Plan and execute dry-docking activities within approved budgets.
Quality & Continuous Improvement

Identify opportunities for process improvement and drive implementation of approved initiatives in collaboration with the Quality team.

Define performance expectations and work with management to update SOPs.

Ensure alignment of onshore and offshore staff with Safety & QMS procedures.
-
Implement corrective actions to resolve HSEQ issues and foster a strong safety culture.
Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) Compliance

Cultivate and sustain a strong onboard safety culture.
-
Act as part of the Incident Command team as per the Contingency Planning Manual.

Ensure a compliant and safe working environment for seagoing personnel.
-
Implement corrective actions for safety hazards; escalate when necessary.
-
Deliver safety briefings and training during vessel visits.
People & Leadership Management

Set clear, measurable goals for shipboard personnel.
-
Lead, coach, mentor, and develop team members to achieve professional growth and operational excellence.
-
Ensure development plans are in place and actively monitored.
-
Conduct regular performance discussions to support continuous improvement.
-
Retain top talent and take necessary action on underperformance.
Job Experience & Qualifications
Essential
-
Bachelor’s degree / Diploma in Marine Engineering or Navigation, or equivalent shipping qualification.
-
MEO Class 1 Certificate (Chief Engineer) or Certificate of Competency III/2 (Second Engineer) under STCW.
-
Minimum 3 years of relevant sailing experience as Chief Engineer or Second Engineer, with at least 12 months sailing time as Chief Engineer.

Proficiency in spoken and written English.
Desirable
-
Familiarity with Classification Society procedures and regulations.
-
Prior experience managing personnel.
-
Proven experience in dry dockings, mobilizations, ship repairs, and in-water repairs.

Demonstrated commercial acumen and ability to manage vessel technical budgets.
-
Strong computer skills and proficiency in relevant software.
-
Business administration qualifications are an advantage.
